Broke-Ass Tag: sheath dress

Does anyone really watch awards shows? For me it’s all about the dresses. And, truthfully, I often just scroll through the photos and catty online comments afterwards to save myself some time. With award season in full swing, we’ve got a sister of a bride who wants her sister to look red-carpet ready on her wedding day.

Hi! I have a Can’t Afford It dress… My sister is getting married and has fallen in love with this dress from the Golden Globes this past weekend.

She also loves anything Claire Pettibone. Anything under $1500?

Thank you!!

Megan, love that you’re looking out for your sister. Also, I’m a sucker for white on celebrities. Award shows are a great place to get fashion inspiration for any big event. Let’s focus on the shape, that high collar, and some interesting lace details up top – a trademark of Claire Pettibone’s as well.

Alexandre Vauthier couture

Soft Chiffon Sheath Tank with Illusion Lace Back ($499 at David’s Bridal)

Notte by Marchesa ($995 at Saks Fifth Avenue)

Corrina Gown ($495 at J. Crew)

Backless Mermaid ($370.99 at For Her and For Him)

Scalloped Lace Cut Out ($349.99 at For Her and For Him)

Nicole Miller Lace And Crepe De Chine Bridal Gown ($1,650 at Nicole Miller)

OK. As I’m sure you’ve noticed, the last gown is above the limit but it was just too good not to include. Plus, it’s on sale so it might be worth watching in case the price drops a bit more. Any other BABs out there have a fun dress suggestion to add?

Finding alternatives when you fall in love with something unique is super challenging.

I’ve fallen head over heels for Catherine Deane’s Lita gown, and even though I’m still in the early stages of my dress hunt and I’ve seen plenty of others that I’ve liked, I can’t get this dress out of my head. It’s probably a stretch, because it’s such a unique dress and the sum of the details is what has made me so enchanted by it, but if you could attempt a Can’t Afford It, Get Over It post with similar (way cheaper!) alternatives, I would be so grateful. Thanks!

This has been by far the toughest challenge thrown my way thus far. You’re right, the details do make it difficult to replicate.

Catherine Deane’s Lita Gown ($2,400 at BHLDN)

    Aiguille Gown ($1,200 at BHLDN)

Astoria Frill Wedding Dress (£197.50 at Phase Eight)

Cream Champagne Chiffon Gown ($319 at Entre Nous Bridal via Etsy)

    Margarete ($478.99 at Ruche)

    Viola ($399.99 at Ruche)

Crinkle Chiffon Column Gown ($449.99 at David’s Bridal)

Beaded Gown with Illusion Bodice ($199.99 at David’s Bridal)

Clearly nothing is a perfect match but I focused on a variety of the possible details you might like. Another option: consider buying a dress that matches the basic silhouette of the Deane gown,  then add a shawl or some sort of lace-inspired sleeve to achieve the look you really want. Any other ladies out there have a possible solution?

This week's CAI/GOI request comes from a gal who wants to keep her bridal look simple, elegant, chic, and so-not-strapless. Bride Monika wrote in describing her dream dress dilemma: I feel a bit alone in the wilderness of wedding dress shopping as I don't suit/like strapless dresses on me, but there seems to be a really limited range of dresses with straps/shoulders/sleeves that aren't: a.…
