Alright grooms, I’m gonna give you a quick and dirty lesson about your shirting. Don’t worry — it’s not gonna be that brutal. However, before we get into styling, it’s important to note a few key things when the shopping for the right shirt, especially when it comes to a wedding. And while it may seem that shirts can run on the spendy side, menswear is very much an investment — a quality piece will be sure to last you quite some time and will be re-wearable for a number of different occasions.

    J. Crew Bib Tuxedo Shirt
Crosby Pique Bib Tuxedo Shirt, $98 at J. Crew

As always, make sure you’re going to be more on the end of formal or casual. If you’re wearing a tux, you might want to think about a tux shirt (though you don’t necessarily have to). You may also want to consider a French cuff shirt if you’re going formal, and that then gets you into styled cufflinks, which can be a fun accent. No matter the formality, you’ll definitely want to make sure you find a shirt that’s well-tailored and fits your body just right.

    French Cuff Shirt
Joseph & Feiss White Solid Classic Fit Dress Shirt, $19.99 (on clearance) at Mens Wearhouse

    Sapphire Cuff Links
Sapphire Pinwheel Cufflink, $20 from The Tie Bar

Okay, now for the important part: How to wear it. First off, always make sure you iron it. Seriously, it only takes a couple minutes and it makes a world of difference. Another thing to remember is the collar stays. These are those little plastic inserts that keep the points of your collar, well, pointy.

    Metal Collar Stays
Metal Collar Stays, $5 per pair from The Tie Bar

As far as having the sleeves rolled up and the top button buttoned, that depends, yet again, on the formality and what’s most comfortable for you. If you’re wearing some sort of tie, more than likely you’re gonna want to be buttoned all the way up.

Stylist Tip: Full sleeve length should always be just below the wrist. If it falls just about an eighth of an inch out of a blazer sleeve, that’s perfect.

Choosing a color or pattern is strictly up to you. Mostly, that’s going to be determined by the wedding colors, formality, suits style, etc. There is an endless array of options out there to choose from, and tons of retailers who have their own selections. Below, I’ve posted a few affordable shirt options from some men’s shops you can check out, along with some higher-end pieces for those of us with luxe taste.

    Banana Republic Gingham Shirt
Slim Fit Gingham Twill Shirt, $80 from Banana Republic

    Joseph Abboud Button Up Shirt
Joseph Abboud Classic Fit Shirt, $90 from Mens Wearhouse

Hugo Boss Purple Striped Button Up
Hugo Boss Trim Fit Shirt, $145 from Nordstrom

Alright guys, that’s what’s up with button-up shirts. There’s a lot out there, but just remember these three things: tailoring, fit and style. There are a bevy of options, but really all that is just personal preference. Do you have places you shop at for your suit items? Share with us in the comments below!

Photo: Zach & Jody You covet those tattered Cons you've had since your first show. And yes, you just can't part with those New Balances you wear every weekend.
