Marriage Equality

In a monumental and long overdue decision today, the U.S. Supreme Court declared that love is love, and everyone has the legal right to marry.

DAMNIT, you guys. This is fucking big.

I was a teenager in Wyoming at the time Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die on a buckrail fence in a town across the state. He did die, six days later on Oct. 12, 1998. That was the day after my 13th birthday. I was just beginning to understand sex and sexuality, and I knew that for this man to die because of who he loved was wrong. Very very wrong.

On October 21, 2014, same-sex marriage became legally recognized in Wyoming. I swelled with pride that my small, unpopulated home state would rise above the vitriol and make the right decision.

Now, the rest of the nation can join suit.

But there is still so, so much work to be done. Torment rages on. Hate still writhes in the ignorant underbelly. Mean, hurtful actions take place every single day because so many refuse to let others be.

I find it difficult to come up with anything that could make this moment more poignant than it already is.

“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. … [The challengers] ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.” — Justice Kennedy
