Is your wedding dress a splurge-worthy occasion? That’s what Ya-ting is trying to decide.
Hello! I’m kind of in a dilemma about a wedding dress… I’m in LOVE with the Vera Wang Joy dress from Fall 2012. but I’m not in love with the price tag ($6000+). I have been to a couple of wedding dress shops but have not found a similar style yet and I feel as if I won’t be able to. I have some people telling me to splurge, and some saying it’s not worth it. What do you think and can you help me find similar styles?? Thank you!!
Personally, I wanted to splurge on my dress, but also keep it within reason. For me, $700 was a stretch in what I was comfortable with. Later, after buying my dress, my fiancé told me he had envisioned me spending $1,000 to $1,500. Basically, people differ on what a “splurge” actually constitutes. It’s all relative! Is an authentic Vera Wang paramount to your wedding vision? And are you willing to cut back in other ways to compensate? I can’t answer these questions for you, but I can give you other options to consider before you decide to throw down 6 large on a real Vera Wang. I found several, far more affordable blush and off-white options that I think you’ll love…
CAN’T AFFORD IT
(Estimated retail price $6,500)

Organza Fit and Flare ($1,248 at David’s Bridal)
Theia Tiered Organza Mermaid Gown ($1,495 at Neiman Marcus)
Blossom Sheer Mermaid Evening Dresses by Mignon ($398 at eDressme.com)
I have to caution people about being in love with a dress they’ve never tried on. It’s a beautiful dress, but that lower waist, for example, wouldn’t look good on me. The dress I ended up with, in fact, wasn’t what I would have envisioned for myself. But it looked amazing. Try some things on. Give it a try, and, if the price is still too much, pick the features you truly love, and focus on finding those details in a cheaper dress.
