Can’t Afford It? Get Over It! A Jim Hjelm Inspired Gown For Under $1,000

Hey BAB’s! It’s that time again, where I, your CAI/GOI guru, help you find a wedding dress you can love as much as the one with the hefty price tag. This week Gloria wrote in trying to help her sister out. She is a busty girl with a petite frame and she has her eye on something strapless. More specifically, a strapless Jim Hjelm gown. He is known for his unique and delicate embroidery. This gown is oh-so lovely. The tulle cascading in the back has beautiful lace, floral embroidery. Did I mention how romantic it is?  The back is truly unique. I look at dresses allllll the time and I haven’t seen many out there with this design. I really lerve this one.  *Sigh* But enough about me, this gal is gettin’ hitched in June! Also, since the wedding is going to be country, rustic and the bride will be wearing her boots (which I love, by the way!) I tried to find gowns that would look kick-ass with some cowgirl boots! I am blessed in the chest region, too, so I know the importance of finding the right fit for your body type. Strapless is actually a great style for the girls. I focused on a sweetheart neckline because something that is dipped is better than something going straight across your bust line. We don’t want the girls looking like a shelf on our wedding day if you know what I mean. Also, as Christen added in the comments, adding a strap isn’t a costly alteration. It’s all about what you feel your best in. You want to feel beautiful but still be comfortable. You’ll definitely need a good, strapless bra although some women do just fine with the built-in cup. Here’s what Gloria wrote in:

“My sister is getting married in June 2015 and has found the dress.  The problem is she is quite endowed in the chest department and the dress is strapless.  What would you suggest for a cheaper alternative that would look great on her petite (large chest) frame?  The dress she has found is Jim Hjelm style 8002.  The dress is gorgeous but the price and the fact that it’s strapless is a concern.

Thank you,

Gloria”

Can’t Afford It? Get Over It! Naomi Neoh’s “Fleur” For Under $1500

Hey there, BABs! This week we’re helping Cassie get over a very pretty, very romantic gown inspired by the style of Audrey Hepburn. The designer is Naomi Neoh from London. She debuted she first bridal collection in 2008 and has been wowing us ever since.  She likes to use only the very best fabrics available. “Fleur” is actually one of the most popular designs from her collection, with its pale blush corset and removable French lace long sleeved jacket. Both jacket and sash can be removed to switch up the look. Here is what Cassie had to say:

“Hello,

I’m trying to find a look alike dress for the Naomi Neoh “Fleur” style. My budget is around 1500, and I’m IN LOVE with this dress, but they won’t ship to the U.S. :(. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks so much,

Cassie”

I got this, Cassie!

{Can’t Afford It/Get Over It} A Claire Pettibone-Inspired Gown For Under $1,000

Kate’s got caviar taste but not enough clams to fund it. And she doesn’t want to sell her precious pets in order to snag a real Claire Pettibone.

Hello, I have been enjoying reading through your blog, lots of great tips written in a humorous way ;)

I’m a UK bride to be and we seem to have a lot less choices wedding dress and price wise than in the US. I have been totally lusting over the Claire Pettibone Chantilly wedding dress, along with a few of her others. However, unless I remortgage my pets there is no way I could afford even a quarter of one of the CP dresses. If you have any ideas for alternatives I would really appreciate it. I’m looking for a lace/vintage style wedding dress with an interesting or unique back.

Thank you!

Kate

Kate, you’re right; Claire Pettibone does amazing things with lace. No one will argue with you there. Unfortunately, few people have her touch. Also, the amazing lace backs that she features aren’t easy to find. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t find something vintage-inspired with lace to have without sacrificing Fido. Stick with that open-minded attitude and let’s look at some options that are less than a sixth of the cost of your inspiration.

If the dream isn’t here, consider piecing it together. BLDHN, for example, has a pretty bridal lace tank top that can be put over a simple white dress. Or, David’s Bridal offers a variety of lace jackets that can be similarly used. Since you seem a little open to other vintage styles, consider checking out a some of our older posts, like the ones inspired by the Catherine Deanes Lita Gown or Pronovias Petunia dress. Lastly, if you’re going to stretch your budget, it doesn’t hurt to check out sites where brides re-sell their dresses, like Pre-OwnedWeddingDresses.com or Once Wed’s used wedding dress listings.  Claire Pettibone is quite popular on those sites.

{Reader Request} Lacy Dresses

Help!  I recently got engaged and, while searching through a wedding dress look book, I absolutely fell in love with two Claire Pettibone dresses that are way out of my price range.  My fiance and I are planning an evening backyard ceremony and I love the look of the lace in these dresses.  I think it’s elegant without being too formal for our outdoor wedding.  I’m looking to spend around $750-$900.  Thanks in advance!

I think that I can help find a nice, slinky dress with lacy texture for you! What do you think of these?
