When I was planning my first wedding, I had a very specific idea in mind for my shoes: I desperately wanted peep-toe, kitten-heel slingback pumps in turquoise and white polka dot. I’ll go ahead and let you Google that to see what you come up with …
A whole lot of nothing, right? Yeah, that’s what I got too, and not much has changed in the four years since my original search. And you know what? That sucked. Now, of course, my polka dot love has become a love for glitter, which is ubiquitous, so life is a little easier for this girl.
But if that hadn’t been the case, at least now I could turn to Project Shoe, a new company that allows for custom shoes from the bottom up. No, seriously, you can design damn close to whatever you want — loafers, slingbacks, high-heeled oxfords — let your shoe-lovin’ mind run wild.
I got to try my hand at it, and I was hoping to have my shoes well before this post, but since I’m extremely Libra (read: indecisive), I didn’t actually make up my mind until about a week ago. And since the shoes are custom, it takes a hot minute for them to be made and delivered (OMGGGG … I want them now). But, let’s chat about the awesomeness of this, shall we?
This is where you start. Are you starting to see my dilemma?
From there, it just gets … more. You can choose various toe shapes — pointed, round, cap, loafer, peep-toe, etc. — and heel shapes/heights. Then you start in with the fabric and color. And they’re all glorious.
There’s a whole heap of leather, textile, woven, silk, pony hair and — yep — glitter (11, to be precise) options. Depending on the design of your shoe, you can have as few as two different spots to choose the material or as many as five. Based on the swatches Project Shoe sent me, the materials are all solid, high-quality materials that won’t auto-destruct as soon as you wear them out a few times.
Project Shoe wants you to try it out for yourself: One lucky Broke-Ass will win the chance to design her own shoes!
Each of the options in the box below is one entry method. The more you enter, the better your chance of winning! Share your shoe design on Twitter or Instagram, making sure to tag both @brokeassbride and @projectshoe, and leave the link URL in the comment section below! Open to US residents only (sorry, love!).
We’ve talked about my DIY skillz before (read: they don’t exist). If I were set out into the wild of crafting land (Michael’s), I’d have no freaking clue where to start, what kind of goodies to get, etc. I mean, it’s very likely I’d get caught in a vortex of “Oooh! Shiny!” and “Lookit all the pretty coooolllloooorrrrsssss!!!” and I’d walk out with paint and glitter and nothing to affix them to.
So, naturally, when I discovered Darby Smart and their very no-nonsense “We’ll send you all the shit, and instructions, and you just have to sit down and DO IT” approach to DIY and crafting, I was totally intrigued. Because I like making things and showing them off, but I kind of really need cut-and-dry instructions and no wiggle room to mess it up. Though, it’s very likely I will still find a way *foreshadowing*. And then looking at Darby Smart‘s website, and ogling at all the things I could actually like, do, the world very quickly became my wannabe-crafty-DIY oyster. Really, they got me hook, line and sinker with the animal figurines affixed to … anything.
So, of course, I hollered at them, and they happily agreed to send me a kit. I really wanted the Champagne flutes — they have two kits for Champagne flutes, and I didn’t really care which one, I just knew I needed to have them. A few days later, an adorably turquoise-and-chevron box arrived on my doorstep.
And then it sat on my table, and then under my table for a while. Because you guys, DIY is intimidating.
Until this past Sunday. That handsome guy of mine had to go into work for a while and I was kind of binged-out on Netflix and it was a fairly sunny day, so the light in our living room was awesome and my workspace was calling to me. So I poured some wine and got to work (yes, it was past noon, and no, DIY can’t be done without alcohol in the circles I run in).
1. Tape off design you want — the kit comes with stickers (shown on the “Drink” flute) and I used electrical tape for my own stripey design. I also taped off the top part of the glass where lips were to touch it, because I have this super weird thing about texture and the texture of etching makes my teeth hurt.
2. Slather on the etching glue. No, seriously, lube that baby up. Protip: Brush all in the same direction to give a smoother appearance. And watch out for clumpage, because that’ll also make it look, well, clumpy.
3. Let dry. Wait. Drink wine.
4. Rinse with warm water. You’ll want to make sure all that clumpage I talked about rinses off.
5. Untape. De-sticker. Revel in your masterpiece.
OK, so maybe they’re not some grand masterpiece (maybe I should have just etched the inside of the letters instead of the whole thing) but they’re still pretty freaking rad. And now I have Champagne flutes! Certainly those ladies with more DIY skillz than me will be able to conjure up some baller designs.
Oh, and hey, BABs, you can totes get in on this, because Darby Smart is giving away one of these Etched Champagne Flute kits!
As per usual, each task earns an entry. Open to US residents only (sorry loves!) Good luck, BABs!
As a lover of wedding things, I’ve found that it’s not often I get googly-eyed over kitschy bridal stuff — bedazzled hoodies, hot pink sashes, underwear with words printed on the booty. I know that some homies love this stuff, but it’s never really been my deal.
However, there was one “bride” focused item I always found super drawn to — stemware.
Man, a Champagne flute with the word “bride” etched in a super swirly and artistic font? Gimme. I’m a sucker for glassware as is (proof), but glassware for drinking fancy things that bubble, would serve as a reminder of a day that I put a helluva lot of of work into … and was designated just for me? DONE. In fact, I bought a Champagne coupe with just such a design for one of my oldest and dearest friends whose wedding I can’t attend this summer. I hope it becomes a wedding keepsake she treasures … or at least makes her feel a little bit more bride-y on the day of her wedding.
But what about custom, hand-painted glassware? Don’t even get me started. And unfortunately, personalized awesomeness like this is usually one of those little wedding extras that fall right out of BAB’s budget … because we just can’t justify it.
Judi Painted It, purveyor of pretty, picturesque vessels, ups the fancy wedding drinkware game in a big way. With her personalized, customized, hand-painted, dishwasher-safe, made in the US of A awesomeness, it’s pretty easy to say that you’ll be at awesome status while sipping out of one of these bad boys.
In colors to match your wedding scheme, and with pretty designs raging from bride and groom stick figures to wedding day outfits to gorgeous flowers, you can pretty much have a field day with your stemware look.
One lucky Broke-Ass Bride can get her manicured mitts on a $50 gift card to Judi Painted It so that she can drink in the glory that is personalized wedding stemware!
Just because you might not be the winner of the giveaway, doesn’t mean you’re not a winner in our hearts: Judi Painted It is still offering up a hefty 15% discount for BABs when they use the code BAB15 at checkout! Head on over to her website or Etsy shop and get to lookin!
As usual, each method earns you an entry. The more you do, the higher your chance of winning. Good luck!
Y’all, let’s talk bras, shapewear and all those other underpinnings that are a total asspain but are soooo wildly necessary if you’ve got anything more than a Kate Moss physique.
I bought a corset-y strapless bra for my first wedding, begrudgingly. It was expensive, but once the chick at the lingerie shop had me fastened in, I knew it was a good buy. I thought I’d pretty much only wear it on my wedding day, but new it *might* come in handy on other occasions and, truth be told, I’ve worn it a ton. It’s perfect under those slightly sheer dresses, or ones that have lower backs, and it holds the girls up while also whittling my waist (helloooo, Dolly!).
But here’s the thing: Buying these types of items, the ones that are necessary but don’t seem necessary, can be tough because you don’t really want to plunk down the cash for them. But trust a sister when I say this — sometimes there’s a little extra squish that you just want to cinch into place, or you have unruly boobs that tend to go all double-bubble, and shapewear is a freaking godsend for these situations.
Lucky you! One BAB will have the awesome opportunity to win $75 toward Hourglass Angel to get yourself in good shape for the big day with all the right underpinnings. Whether you’re looking for a little waist-whittling, boob-boosting or butt-lifting, you’ll be able to find the right piece to go under your wedding gown.
Hourglass Angel has a gargantuan selection of products, ranging from XS to 5XL, so ladies of all shapes and sizes will find something to fit their needs. And whether you’re looking for a corset, shapewear or something sexy to slip in to, Hourglass Angel has it all, and including a whole mess of things for under $50. Oh, and they’ve got free shipping over $75 … who doesn’t love free shipping?
As usual, each task snags you one entry. Open to US residents only.
And just in case you don’t win (sorry, darling) you can still get your mitts on a pretty rockin’ deal: You can still get curves in all the right spots for you and your gals! When you order 4 or more shapers from Hourglass Angel’s bridal section, you get to knock 25% off the order!

Tiffany Kirchner-Dixon was inspired by the famous premier signs of old Hollywood movies for this project. There’s something so glamorous and exciting about big flashing twinkle lights! For the inside of the frame, you could have a photograph, or follow Tiffany’s lead and create a chalkboard. It’s the perfect canvas for adding your own creative stamp to the wedding décor.
What You’ll Need:
Large vintage frame, with sides at least 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide
Strand of umbrella lights with globe bulbs
Black permanent marker
Drill bit and drill
Scrap wood block
Staple gun and staples
What You Do:
1. To arrange the lights evenly around the frame, measure the length and width of the frame, and then count the sockets on the strand. Measure and mark out the bulb spacing with a permanent marker.
2. If the sockets have umbrella clips, use wire cutters with a cutting edge to remove them.
3. Choose a drill bit slightly larger than the socket width, so that when you drill the frame, the socket can slide into the hole. Using a scrap wood block as backing for the frame, center the drill tip in each mark and carefully drill a hole from the front side of the frame through to the back. You may need an assistant to hold the frame to keep it from moving while drilling.
4. Remove the bulbs from the sockets and, starting at the bottom corner of the frame, push the socket closest to the cord end through the back of the frame. Carefully centering the staples over the cord (you do NOT want to puncture the cord), staple the cord to the frame on either side of the socket. Repeat with each socket.
5. Secure excess cord with more staples, or use tie wraps to tie excess cord together.
6. Screw in the bulbs and plug in the lights.
To make a chalkboard similar to the one pictured, cut a piece of Masonite board to the dimensions of the frame. Spray the Masonite with several coats of black chalkboard spray paint. Let dry. Place the painted board into the frame and use chalk to write a message for the guests.
