{Engagement Sesh} Jennifer and Daniel’s Old Hollywood, High-Fashion Love Shoot

Day-um you guys! I swear, these posts keep getting more and more delicious. This week, we have Jennifer and Daniel (aka: Dannifer) and their gooorgeous engagement shoot. They hired a photog who wasn’t available for their wedding date and DID IT UP, yo. Since they didn’t really plan on posing for wedding pics, they went all out for this rockin’ e-sesh. Get out your fans, cuz this one is a hot one. I’ll let Jennifer take it away:

Our inspiration was vintage Hollywood and most of the photos were taken at the location of the wedding: Hollywood Forever. We chose Laurie because she is a band/music photographer primarily, and we are both in the music industry and we fell in love with her photos after seeing a shoot she did for a friends band.

She couldn’t shoot the actual wedding because her birthday was our wedding date, 11-11-11 She spent a lot of time and prep with us from picking out clothes, hair/makeup, scouting locations, to all the small details, and was very affordable and super easy/accommodating.

We didn’t want conventional “engagement” (or wedding) photos because those are always super lame looking. We wanted something more unique, fashiony, magazine, candid looking. We didn’t want to spin in circles and have our hair blowing in the wind; so we opted for cool images at the wedding location instead. We didn’t do “posed” wedding photos, so this was our chance to get cool shots together.

Whew. *fans self* If this is what their engagement shoot holds for us, I can’t wait to see the wedding. Stay tuned, Broke-Asses! xoxo

Dressing the Dudes – on a Budget

Now this is different: a request for the men!

I was wondering if you could suggest some budget friendly options for suit/tux rentals. My fiancé is planning on buying a suit, something along the lines of a skinny fit modern suit with a vest and all. We set aside a few hundred dollars in our budget for him to buy a suit, but we can possibly ask his groomsmen to spend that much money on their suit! Is there any place other then Men’s Wearhouse to get a modern looking suit to rent? Help please!

I did a bit of research and here are some affordable suit options:

H&M – They don’t have an e-commerce site so I can’t link to any suits, but H&M has got some fashionable and trendy pieces for men. Check them out!

Source

Macy’s - Wait for sales and keep an eye out for coupons, because we got my husband’s suit for a steal during a sale/friends and family discount combo. They’ve got all different cuts, colors and fits, and vests come separately.

Kenneth Cole Reaction, $150

Michael by Michael Kors, $225

Syms - If there is a Syms near you, I highly recommend checking it out. It’s not the most glamorous store, but you can find a suit at a great bargain. Again, they don’t have an e-commerce site so I can’t link to particular products, but it’s worth a trip to the store!

Source

Kohl’s - Surprisingly enough, they have a lot of suits for the groomsman on a budget. This suit by Apt. 9 is only $150, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg there!

You could also consider getting suits made. I can’t speak to their quality or service firsthand, but I’ve heard good things about Tailor4Less and StudioSuits.

Good luck, and please come back and let us know what you ended up with!

{DIY or DIE} Suiting Up The Boys

To be fair, I’m not sure if this counts as DIY, but it took a whole day of my life and I did bang by shin up pretty badly while lunging for a pair of pants so I ended up with a battle scar. From what I can tell, that’s all the criteria for DIY projects. (No? You don’t look like you buy it. Alright, then you leave me no choice… Classic Misdirection with Cuteness it is…)

Look, everyone! Look at my cute kitties!

IMG_7147{Elephant!}

IMG_7124{Moose!}

Now that that has been magically solved: let me tell you all about getting the groomsmen outfitted last weekend. (Grab your antacids.)

Now, getting my girls into their outfits was a mild nightmare, but I expected that. I am a sorority girl, you see, and where that experience taught me the beauty of true friendship and the valuable life-skill of compromise, empowerment and win-win negotiating, it also taught me that getting seven women outfitted is as mess-free as nailing Jell-O to a tree.

But the girls… the girls ended up being easy! And if you tell a group of girls you don’t care what accessories they wear as long as “cone-bra” isn’t on the list, you know they’ll all show up looking absolutely fabulous. Basically, I got the girls to J. Crew and 72 hours later my girls were all outfitted. Hallelujah!

The guys on the other hand! HOLY CRAP! The term “herding cats” springs to mind. I knew going in that it would have to be quick and dirty, because these exceptionally sweet men are the eat-wings-and-play-video-games type. I knew I had twenty, maybe thirty minutes to get them all fitted before their eyes glossed over and they were only capable of pouting and/or communicating solely via farting noises. I used to work in men’s fashion, so I’m not sure how this caught me by surprise, but even with a simple groomsmen getup, there are several thousand pieces. {Also, The Groom was a lot more adamant than I was that the men be uniform.}

But The Groom didn’t know what he wanted them to look like, what materials felt OK, or how thick the ties should be. They just had to be The Same, and he told me affectionately with a kiss on the forehead that trusted me to make that happen. Which is why I hauled him out of bed at 9AM on Saturday and insisted that we did a lot of running around and price-checking before the guys even showed up. Because if you can’t be drunk, you need to be prepared. The mission was simple: white shirts, navy pants, green and navy tie, brown shoes.

Now, we’re not made of money. Our wedding party? Also not made of money. Going into outfitting both the men and the women, I wanted to find as many items on sale or on promotion as possible. Spread the savings around, right? I also get this insane high when I save more than I spend. Bargain shopping? It’s like a sport for me.

A contact sport.

We cruised the mall {Macy’s, Kenneth Cole, Jonhston & Murphy and Bostonian} looking for the best price for a good-quality product. Kenneth Cole ended up being our winner– Showlaces took the gold, with a markdown price of $50 {instead of the original $145}. The store manager, of course, wouldn’t let us put the shoes on hold for the guys to actually come try. Be advised: Sale items go quick and most stores won’t hold them. To combat this, you have to be willing to do one of two things: 1. Tolerate seven antsy men as you try to find one shoe, on sale, in all their sizes or 2. Go alone and be prepared to buy all the shoes for the men if you find something that works.

We opted for route #2, but make sure you ask about the return policy. We got lucky; all the shoes fit and the men won’t turn back into pumpkins at midnight. Or something.

Then we headed out to Syms, which is like the holy mecca of bargain shopping for men. It’s last season’s designer suits for closeout prices. I was skeptical at first, being someone who was young and stupid and whose parents paid her credit card bills for her first year of college. I expected the brands I saw there to be “Tommy Hillfighter” or “Kenny Charcoal”. But no. The Groom walked out with this suit from Tommy Hilfiger {which, I must say, looked disarmingly handsome on him} and paid less than half of the retail cost. Cha-Ching!

We ran into two small problems. The first, was that the guys were all actually two sizes bigger than what they told James, so all the legwork I made him do earlier that morning was totally moot; all the sizes had to be pulled all over again once we showed up with the crew. Because of this, we bumped into issue #2. The only thing we ended up having to compromise on: The groomsmen ended up with two different brands of navy pants. The store didn’t have one brand in all the sizes in-stock, so I spent forty five minutes digging through racks — which, yes, was frustrating– to find them similarly colored and textured pants. I slipped half of the groomsmen one brand, and the other half a different branding, begging them in a whisper to please not tell The Groom, hoping he wouldn’t notice. {He didn’t.}

IMG_7025{Proof that the brands match.}

Once we had all the sizes, though, and the guys were all dressed and it was time for them to get measured, there were a couple things I wished I had known. I am here today to pass these nuggets of knowledge on to you.

1. Budget stores mean budget tailors. They’re amazing at what they do– tailoring. Their customer service leaves a little to be desired. In a men’s store, you are not The Bride. You are the pain-in-the-ass chick who keeps asking for the guys to get cuffs hemmed into the pants {because so help you God, your groom just decided that’s what he wants}. Remember when you went to get your gown? And everyone told you how pretty you were? And your friends all fawned over you and there was free champagne? Well, wake up, sister. Bargain shopping for men is more like attending a minor-league hockey game. It smells a little weird, the language is more colorful and if you find your shoes sticking to the floor, you don’t want to look down. It’s worth it, though, when you get to count all the money you saved everyone.

2. Getting fitted means being touched. Warn your groomsmen. I didn’t warn mine, and have hysterical photographs of their facial expressions from when the tailor stood behind them and bear-hugged them to measure their waists. Then he hiked one of the guy’s pants all the way up and that poor groomsman lit up like a Christmas tree. I thought it was a rip-roarin’ good time, but it wouldn’t have hurt anyone if I had let the guys know, they should expect the tailor to be in all of their personal space. {We’re the first in our group of friends to be getting married, so The Guys had never really been fitted for suits before.}

All in all, it was worth it. I’m still deciding which Tommy Hilfiger tie they’ll end up wearing, but the sale section is amazing right now in their online shop — I suggest checking it out! They’re going to be responsible for finding their own white shirts {until The Groom decides that those all need to be the same brand, too, and then it’ll be *my job* once more :) }, so they’re on their own for now as far as price hunting goes, but my numbers don’t lie.

They each paid $50 for shoes and around $32 for pants that would normally be $145 and $150, respectively. The ties I’m ordering are on promotion for $21 instead of their normal $42.90. That’s a total savings of $234.90/groomsman. Multiply that by 6 {which I did, because it made me feel good} and I saved them all, collectively, $1,409.40, give or take. {And that doesn’t even include The Groom’s savings, which were over $400.}

I felt like a champion, and I know the guys appreciated the extra legwork I put in before they were even coaxed out shopping with promises of beer and grilled meats as rewards. A successfully savvy bride is the girl who puts her ducks in a row while they’re still tied up, so they can’t run anywhere.

No, wait… That’s not right…

In all seriousness, the best way to get your guys suited up without paying a personal shopper is to plan ahead with bargain hunting. It keeps the guys from getting antsy, and helps you keep costs down to a minimum. A prepared bride is a bride who doesn’t have to stand, silently panicked, in the middle of the menswear section, staring at a $750 price tag as the groomsmen try to lift her future husband upside down by his ankles, just to see if the outfit gives him optimal kegstand capabilities.

You can outfit all your groomsmen without breaking anyone’s bank. You just have to do your homework. As always, don’t hesitate to email or comment with questions or concerns– or, please, with your own funny Outfit the Groomsmen stories! And don’t forget… We’re all in this together!

Wild about Wedzu {New Handmade Indie Wedding Shop}

Wedzu is the new etsy. Handmade and indie vendors sell their wares directly to you. Except Wedzu is even better for brides, because it is all weddings, all the time. And supporting indie artists is an excellent choice, grasshopper. Plus, handmade indie gear is often among the freshest in wedding style, and is usually bad-ass in its uniqueness. It’s pretty darn broke-ass friendly! Whether you’re just window-shopping for wedding inspiration or have a trigger-happy buying finger… the goodies to be found at Wedzu are hypnotically hype!

{Real Wedding} Raechel + Joel

The adorable Raechel and Joel are the perfect example of a couple who used their wit, creativity, and awesome friends to rock their budget savvy sensibilities to the max, and have themselves a “cheap wedding” that was in no way cheap looking.

To start with, just look at their insanely creative save the date video.  (Caution: be prepared to fall in love)

Ok, so while you’re wiping the drool off your keyboard, let me hit you with this mindboggler: these two cuties threw a wedding fully funded by themselves for only eight thousand dollars. $8,000, people!

Raechel works in visual sales at Anthropologie and worked her store discount for her hair piece and earrings, and she picked up her dress from J. Crew, which she ordered online at Christmas time to capitalize on the seasonal discounts… What a smarty pants! Her bridesmaids were asked to find dresses inspired by champagne colors, and they ended up ranging in budget from $30 to just under $150…. while the groomsmen and the groom all wore mixy-matchy vintage inspired suits.

Raechel and Joel knew that they wanted to splurge on their venue so they reserved a good chunk of their budget for the art gallery where the reception was held. Their evening reception featured drinks and desserts only, the couple saved a pretty penny on catering that way.

Now get this: They actually bought all of the desserts at Costco, which was a big money saver and thanks to Raechel’s creative arranging skills, you can hardly tell they’re store bought! Another one of crafty secrets? All of the wedding decor was from Raechel’s favorite hunting spot, “Wanda’s,” an old grocery store which converted to a thrift store in the ’80s. She scored loads of old crates, silver platters, wooden hat boxes, and milkglass vases for around $50 buckaroos. Talk about getting bang for your buck!

They went the friendor route by buying all of their flowers wholesale and enlisting the help of a buddy who loves doing floral arrangements. The bouquets were tied together and finished off with some vintage champagne lace that Raechel scored at a thrift store for super cheap, and they looked like the bomb diggity. Getting your florals wholesale is a very simple fix if you’re a broke-ass DIY bride.

Our favorite part? Raechel’s words hit deep in our hearts when explaining the day: their wedding was much more of a community event than a random mix of vendors. Every one of her friends were an essential part of something special by helping the wedding come together. Raechel and Joel sure know how to pick ‘em!

So what have we learned from Raechel and Joel? Work at a cool clothing store simply for discounts, have friends who are photographers, culinary experts, and floral lovers, and live off of desserts and sweet treats only! Just kidding, but trusting in your own creativity and leaning on your loving and crafty friends is a lesson from which we can all benefit!

How are you using your friends and family to make your big day special? Are you decorating the space yourself? Are wholesale flowers calling your name? Let us know and send us some wedding porn of your own for us to drool over!

Raechel and Joel left the party in style!

** On an administrative note, we know you love our real wedding features (yay!)… but we want to give our couples more of a chance to share their mindset and process with you, personally! So we’re working up a brief questionnaire to have future featured couples fill out, and we want to know what you want to know. To that end, please share a question or two in the comments below, and maybe you’ll see it answered in future real weddings on The Broke-Ass Bride. Thanks! **

“Just Be You” Inspiration Board #2

Last week’s Just Be You Inspiration Board worked so great (Rock n Roll Bride featured it, hello!), I thought I’d slap another one together for some wedding inspiration and to keep y’all inspired to just be YOU.

This week’s board is filled with ideas that you may have originally scoffed at when first presented with. Truth be told: I scoffed at A LOT of ideas my Specialover presented to me in the beginning of our wed-planning journey. I’d say to him: “What?! Not give everyone an actual seat during the ceremony, are you crazy?!” …And then, after much thought, I realized that a ceremony where some of the guests sat on blankets would be really freakin rad.  Just take a look at the wedding in the bottom right corner of this board.

Just Be You Inspiration Board #2

Cool, right? Just head to a fabric store, purchase some burlap for $1.25/yd and cut it up into picnic blanket-sized sheets. Slap the burlap blankets alongside the aisle and in the front row, and instruct the younger folk to cop-a-squat. And hey, you could even sweeten the deal for those on the ground by serving a little sangria or lemonade.

Crazy idea numero dos that’s actually cool: Doughnut tower cake. You could make that shiz the morning of, dudes. NO JOKE. Hit up The Krisp, pick out 100 doughnuts in assorted flavors and coordinating colors, bring ‘em back to your desert table and stack ‘em until they look pretty. Dessert: DONE. (And damn delicious).

Next up: Dance floor alternative. Let’s face it, some people just don’t dance.  Lawn games are an awesome way to get your guests to have fun and interact. My favorite is Bocce Ball. It’s cheap, super-easy to learn and requires no set-up.

Attire this week is all about honoring your heritage. I asked Mike if he were Scottish would he wear a kilt at our wedding, and he came back with an enthusiastic YES. So if you’re considering incorporating your heritage in your attire, I say go for it! Even if that means wearing a skirt, gentlemen ;)

And lastly, there needs to be more pizza served at weddings. PERIOD. End of story. Just look at that pizza porn up there. I’d serve that at my wedding in a hot minute — and it would be cheap.

What “crazy ideas” are you reconsidering now?

Britt

{We’re Loving} Custom budget wedding rings + gifts!

Ring a ding ding. When I came across Tina H. Dee, who handcrafts bad-ass alternative, affordable unique wedding rings and custom gifts that your wedding party will be thrilled to rock. I took one peek at her etsy site and started writing this post. Its, like, broke-ass to the max.

Perfect for your unfussy fiance(e), or your own unfussy finger, these rings and things start at around $30, don’t go much higher than $150, and many are customizable. Personalizing rings and gift jewelry with people’s names, special dates or quotes is a bonus that even broke-asses can get behind!

People. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Etsy is where its AT!

You’re welcome.

{Wedding Porn} Suthi + Sanjay: a feast of color & texture

When people who work in the industry get married, magic almost always ensues, so we’ve got an awesomesauce (and timely) real wedding feature today! It’s the stunning wedding of Suthi and Sanjay! Yep, the same Suthi of Suthi Picotte Photography who’s giving away a free wedding photography package with us (hurry, you can still enter!). For now though you can enjoy these gawjuss photos and take away some wedding inspiration too from this phenomenal green wedding!

We big puffy heart Suthi and her gorgeous wedding!  Through her lens at work, she has seen her fair share of gorgeous dresses, decor, and inspiration… so she was well versed in inspiration when it came time to envision very own ultra fabbie wedding. Suthi had a tremendous entourage of wedding visionaries including florals by Holly Flora, event planning by Angel Swanson of Love and Splendor, and photography by Amy and Stuart. Suthi & Sanjay tied the knot in Los Angeles, and because they are both in the arts (Sanjay is a film producer), naturally their wedding was overflowing with creativity!

Serious eye candy for the stylephile in us all!

Suthi looks like a goddess while getting laced into her stunning dress

The absolute best thing about the wedding was that Suthi and Sanjay incorporated loads of colors and textures into their day. Suthi wore a dress that looked good enough to eat with all of its decadent layers of pleats and ruffles. Yum! She looks like a porcelain doll getting all laced up! I swear, this dress is one of my favorites ever, and guess what yo? You can rent this exact style of St. Pucci at a fraction of the cost at A One Night Affair!

Love this St. Pucci gown? You can rent it for $800 at onenightaffair.com!

Her colorful and trendy bouquet took a mix of colors and consistency orange orchids, green succulents, pink peonies, and deep wine colored roses and were tied together with a bright aqua colored ribbon. Y’all know I love a girl who’s not afraid of some color!

Holly Flora made sure that Suthi's bouquet was bursting with colors. Gorgeous!

They laced in some insanely fly personal touches, such as a beautiful vignette in the entryway complete with exquisite sari fabric, feathers, florals, old family photos, letters and peacocks. A vignette is the perfect eye-catching way to greet your guests and introduce your theme and overall feel of the event… and if you use objects from around your home or from your family/friends, it doesn’t even have to cost a dime!

I totes want my living room to feel like this!

A close up of the vignette reveals old family photos, letters, and personal items to make the display a beautiful expression of Suthi and Sanjay's history and family lineage.

The ceremony and reception was held at the ever-hip Marvimon House – a convertible indoor/outdoor space. The ceremony was outdoors, with a gorgeous swag backdrop accented with Margiold garlands, weaving Indian tradition into their design.

Don't you adore their style? To die for!

But holy Holly Flora, how much do you love love love the tablescape?! The long and rustic wooden tables featured a bounty of myriad colors including using orange, pink, blue, and purple napkins to identify the tables (using color rather than table numbers or something similar) and an earthy moss table runner. Look familiar? That’s because this very wedding inspired our own wedding tablescapes! Moss is a surprisingly inexpensive and sustainable decor option that adds tons of bang for its buck!

All the vases and votives are from Holly Flora's exquisite collection of eclectic vintage glassware.

Take a moment to enjoy the whimsical florals, colors and textures. Now tilt your head to the side so you prevent drooling on your keyboard.

The varied heights of the vases and the differences in florals and tea lights create a visually drool worthy display. I love that not everything is so matchy-matchy. You can scour flea markets and estate sales you can create an eclectic and visually interesting display, even on a budget! Using bud vases and small vintage glassware for vases requires less floral expense as well because you only need one or two buds per vessel.  Just combine various sizes, colors, and textures and you’ll create a truly beautiful and unique space that will be one of a kind without breaking the bank while being more eco-friendly. Plus after the wedding you’ll have a great collection for your home or to give as gifts!

The small details like this jade tiger add whimsy and drama. Everywhere you look you see some new detail!

This venue is truly decadent! The lighting and decor fit so perfectly.

Guests picked up truffles as a gift from a table decorated with mushrooms and amethyst.

This is one of my favorite wedding photos ever. It communicates such a sexy vibe and mood!

Suthi and Sanjay truly had a magical day with luscious details, texture and personality. Go ahead and take some of this inspiration for your own big day… I know I did!  Be bold. Use color. Infuse your personality. Go absolutely wild and it will look incredibly decadent and personal!
And don’t forget to enter the free wedding photography contest to get a chance to work with Suthi – open until May 1st!

{Real Weddings} Khali + Potsch: a vintageously chic e-shoot

What happens when you mix two colorful actors with personalities as big as their hearts, and a photographer with style unique enough to fit?  You get these kick ass pictures, people. We’re talking unique, delightful,  drool inducing photos… saturated with color, charm, and creative spirit… and shot by one of our faves, Kelty at Steep Street.

Khali and Potsch snuggle up on a vintage couch and make themselves feel at home.

I speak from experience when I say that Kelty hit the jackpot with this bride and the groom, my dear friends Khali and Potsch… a simply fantastic couple, teeming with energy and creativity, and hypnotically stylish. Believe me when I tell you that these are two of the most effervescent, inventive, and utterly fun people we’ve had the pleasure to call friends. Khali is a cross between a blonde bombshell of the fifties, and a colorful style maven… and Potsch looks like he just crawled out of an urban outfitters magazine or marlboro commercial. They’re one of those magnetically fabulous couples, you know what I mean? They have such a strong perrsonal flair and are 100% authentically true to their signature style… their personalities and energy are radiant in every way. (can you tell I adore them?)

This picture reminds me of an old silent film. Khali is a damsel in distress and Potsch is going to save the day!

Khali found Kelty through a wedding blog (stalking pays off!) and fell in love with Steep Street’s trademark style of mixing color and texture in vivid and exciting ways. So she decided they had no choice but to road trip it up to Portland with a car full of clothing for some outfit changes, and meet with Kelty for her very own engagement pictures. And now we all get to enjoy the gorgeousness that resulted!

The new and improved "American Gothic" painting. Now complete with a blue vintage hat!

8

Color me in love - with this vibrant feast for the eyes!

Khali also helped Kelty know what kind of styles she liked by creating a collage of old sepia photographs from the twenties for inspiration, and clearly these photos evoke a similar energy. They first shot at a vintage furniture store that gave them full access: they staged furniture, created their own prop set-ups, tried on old hats and were really making the photos their own. In Kelty’s words, “It was almost difficult to approach them for close-ups because I felt like I was intruding on a scene — they often had full dialogues and took on new characters in each location!”

In one word? HOT.

Creating and staging little vignettes is an easy way to incorporate your own unique style into the photos as well. You can do it anywhere that suits you as a couple, but before you start taking snapshots and re-arranging the displays, just be sure to get the owner’s permission.

They paid homage to their kitty with a prop tiger head they found.

I love all of the colors and elements in this photo. I've been playing "I Spy" with it.

They later shot in a tree lined meadow, rich with the colors and textures of nature and evocatively epic looking trees. This dreamy backdrop looks like the couple went deep into an enchanted forest, but really they are just right off the road! I love how the colors really pop against the nature around them.

Potsch & Khali. Now complete with their very own ampersand.

This picture is full of energy....and makes me want to go play hide and seek or tag.

The ever-artsy Khali worked her super creative mojo to use of these outdoor shots and create a postcard save the date that’s huge on charm but small on cost! Mine’s hanging on my fridge right now!

How's that for broke-ass with sassafrass?

I sure hope Kelty’s photographs of Khali and Potsch makes your eyes and heart as happy as they made ours! If you’re like us, and can’t get enough of Khali & Potsch, be sure to check our her blog Boots & CatEyes and their shop, Honey B wearables and usefuls. And if THAT’s not enough, well fine. Here’s a bad-ass stop motion video Kelty made of K&P dancing it out, to make you love them even more!

We’ve been head over heels in love with Steep Street for a long time, but seeing how Kelty captured our friends vibrant, infectious energy just made our jones to meet and work with her like a zillion times stronger. And awww yeah, we’ll get to meet her at K&P’s wedding this October! You can see more of this session on the Steep Street blog, or visit her website for even more eye candy and inspiration!

Are you doing anything special to let your true colors shine, in your engagement shoot?
