Hey Look! …It’s my face!

Being an actor is like running a small business. You constantly have to be investing and reinvesting in photos, classes, marketing materials,  plastic surgery… oh wait, that last one comes later. The age old most dreaded of all investments is Duhn, Duhn, Duhn, THE HEADSHOT.

Option #1 Why... hello there.

Your headshots are the most important marketing tool you have as an actor. Why? ‘Cause anyone who is going to hire you not only has to like your face, first they also have to notice it. You need that pic that has just enough of “this” with out having too much of “that”. What do I mean by that? I have no frigging idea. Every actor wants the perfect headshot. One that will fling open the doors of every casting directors office and get you the job on the spot.

Well… since everyone has a different opinion, the perfect headshot doesn’t exist. You can imagine how frustrating this can be to actors, a traditionally self-conscious – present company excluded – (oh jeez, was that the right thing to say?) and Broke-Ass crowd. When we throw down $300-800 on something that is far from a sure thing, it makes each and every actors stomach turn.

In the past, I used photographers an agent or another actor had recommended.  I’d look at some pictures in a portfolio online and have to make a huge decision without much knowledge (oh hm, do I smell a wedding planning metaphor here?). You write the check, pick out some nice clothes and cross your fingers. Oh god I hope my skin doesn’t break out. Will they be nice? how’s my hair? Should I take a valium…(oh wait, again that’s a different Hollywood crowd).

Option #2 - I prefer when graffiti matches my shirt.

Well, one of the perks of being involved in the wedding community is that I have gotten to know a lot of photographers and their work. Thanks to that, I no longer fear the mystery that is the Actor’s headshot. When selecting whose lens to put my career in, I finally had plenty of research in the ol’ noggin.

I chose Joanna Wilson, a bad-ass wedding photographer friend, because she and her hubby (check him out for some groom advice) are also laid back New York actors. Just as a good director is made better for understanding what it is to be an actor, a good photographer is better for having been a model. So, being actors, these guys have been both, and they know the most important thing is to relax and have fun.

Option #3

Option #4 I'm down with B.A.B., yeah you know me

I can’t tell you how much better it is to take your pics with someone you have fun with and can just relax. If I can translate this to wedding advice; sure you need a technically skilled photographer who can take an excellent picture, but equally as important is that you need to gel with the person. Make sure they are someone who makes you feel comfortable in front of the camera because, the most important aspect of getting a great pic, is that you are loving the experience.

Option #5

That said, I think my pics came out pretty great. But I need some help picking out one to print. Here are some of the finalists. Can a Hubby get your two cents? Which one should I print to make my primary pic (what would Dana write here… oh yeah), yo?

Option #6 Bow Tie-tastic

Option #7 fuggeta 'bout it

Hunter

{Real E-shoot} Seth + Katerina

Today our real wedding/engagement feature comes to you all the way from New York, yo! Ohhhh, fuggedaboutit! No, just kidding, don’t fuggedaboutit….listen carefully to this brilliant broke-ass bride. Katerina (I wish I could call her K-Lo from the block, but I’ll refrain) decided that in order to be a money saving maven, she would have to come up with way to trim her budget wedding cost. But how? Forego a wedding dress and get married in the nude? Illegal. Give up having food at the wedding and make her guests starve? Cruel. No. None of the above.

Katerina looks bubbly and colorful in her printed dress. I love a girl who's not afraid of color!

She and fiance Seth decided to have their college friend, Nanxi take their engagement photos, rather than skipping it altogether. If you have a family member or friend that can take photos and you’re looking to save a few bones, ask your creative bud to take the photos for you as your wedding gift. It’s the perfect excuse to exploit your friends talents and creativity.

Barefoot in black and white on the Brooklyn Bridge. Say that five times fast. I dare you.

Also? Katerina said that because Nanxi was such a good friend, they really felt relaxed and uninhibited in front of the camera, and it is certainly important to be able to be yourself in your engagement pictures.. Katerina and Seth offered suggestions of where to shoot and they also chose some cute (and extremely tasty) props. Katerina and Seth love to travel and explore, especially in their new home of New York.

Seth is ready to nosh on his delicious prop while Katerina politely poses with her tasty treat.

They took in the food, culture, and architecture of their new abode and incorporated that into their photos. Katerina is cute and colorful, so it’s only fitting that she and Seth’s engagement photos portray just that! They started at the Brooklyn Bridge, and then meandered over to Washington Square Park and finally ended up at West Village.

Katerina has replaced her love of Seth with her love of art and books in this photo.

And of course, Katerina and Seth couldn’t pass up sneaking a cupcake into their photos from their favorite bakery, Crumbs. Seriously, if you don’t have a Crumbs bakery near you, I highly suggest having a cuppy-cake shipped to you, they are that good. Your hips and booty will hate you, but your mouth will do a happy dance. Katerina knows this because she and Seth can hardly walk by the bakery without needing to split a cupcake.

A perfect day for a photoshoot and a lil' picnic in the park!

I LURVVVVE this pic of Katerina and Seth on the steps! Gaw-juss!

Nanxi did a fabulous job photographing these two! It can be stressful having to trust a friend to do something important like this for you, but it’s a perfect Broke-Ass example of getting creative instead of sacrificing!

Do you have a friend who is contributing to your wedding? Are they taking your photos? Baking your cake? Let us know!

{We’re loving} Creative Save-the-Date Videos

I was stumbling through some ridiculously radical and awesome save the date and unique wedding invitation videos on youtube, and am loving all the clever cuties out there repping their artsy, indie, crafty and cool relationships with videos to match!

Video is a great alternative to regular invitations. You’ll use way less paper, and often spend less because you can do it yourself or get a friend to help out. Lets hear it for a green wedding idea, peeps! Plus you can make a more personal impact on your guests through video and music than with paper and words alone. The sky’s the limit on what you can do! Check out a few of my favorites from today:

This sand animation stop motion is so incredibly unique. (and the unusual music choice makes me love it even more)

Got legos? Put your childhood habit to good use, like these next two videos!

This one had me with the kooky and fun music, but I really love its simple charm.

Have you used video for your save the date or wedding invitation? If so, send ‘em in! We’re always looking for creative, real life inspiration to show off!

Happy Memorial Day!

Next up, we have…

Faryl + Nick
July 24, 2010 – Upstate, NY

The two of us are both from, and currently live in, New York City. We have been together for almost 8 years and a little over a year and a half ago we bought a small old farm Upstate, which is where the wedding will be. ALL of our money went to buying that land and the two of us are more than intimidated by the idea of having a wedding and being able to afford it. Photography, is to us, one of the most important elements to a wedding. We love each other like crazy people, but other than loving each other we love photographs of each other. So this is pretty major.

Here’s our save-the-date video!

This is a link to my blog.

I AM CRAZY ABOUT MY H.T.B. (Husband to be!). He makes living so fun and when we get stressed about the wedding we just talk about BEING married, and try not to think about GETTING married. It works every time.

AAAAAAAAAHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.!

Next up is….

Ally + Mike
4.16.2011 – Brooklyn, NY

My amazing wedding buddy Naz told me about this contest (we’re both in the midst of planning our weddings), and since I, too, am a broke-ass bride in need of a photographer, I had to throw my ticket into the ring–and the best way to do that is to tell you the story of how I got engaged.  It happened this past Valentine’s Day/President’s Day weekend.  But it was no simple go-out-to-a-fancy-restaurant-and-put-a-ring-in-the-champagne proposal.  This one involved a White Castle.  And a prank.  And a fake wedding.

Yes, I think I may be the first bride in history who had a wedding first, THEN got engaged.

Let me explain: on Valentine’s Day, certain White Castles around the country do a special “Celebrate Your Love (of the Crave)” celebration, with candles, a maitre d’, printed menus, and yes, even the need to make a reservation.  So, my group of friends decided it’d be fun and funny to stage a fake proposal at the White Castle, just for the sake of a few laughs and to test out our guerilla acting skills.

As we’re planning this, my friend Shaun suggests to (my now fiance) Mike that Mike should ACTUALLY propose to me after we’ve performed our little sketch in the White Castle.  Yes, Shaun wants Mike to propose to me in the White Castle parking lot, under the glaring lights and in the presence of the dumpsters.  Needless to say, Mike thinks this is an awful idea.

However, Shaun is persistent (and annoying) enough that Mike gets fed up–so much so that he now wants to play a prank on Shaun.  The prank: Mike pretends to propose to me in the White Castle parking lot, and I turn him down.  Horribly.  I start to cry and drive off without him, leaving Mike to turn haplessly to Shaun and say, “Shaun, this is all your fault!”

Well, this plan goes off without a hitch.  In fact, it goes so well that Naz (my wedding buddy!) thinks we should take it one step further.  So we do: we call up Shaun the next day to tell him that we’ve worked out all our problems–so well, actually, that now we want to get married.  Right now. At City Hall.  But, we tell Shaun, since City Hall is closed, we want to have a mini wedding ceremony at our house to celebrate with friends.

And yet again, the prank goes off exactly as planned, and Shaun falls for every bit of it.  He organizes an amazing wedding ceremony at our house, complete with flowers, music–the works.  Little does he know this is all a prank on him.  However, little do I know that the prank is soon to be turned around on me: because after the big reveal to Shaun (which we slyly worked into our “fake” vows), Mike turns to me with a box of cupcakes from my favorite bakery and says, “Let’s get this party started right!”  And what do I find in the box of cupcakes?  A REAL engagement ring.  Of course, I say yes–after making sure it wasn’t another prank, of course.

So that is my story.  Long and epic?  Yes.  But surely something to remember.

Next is…

Elizabeth + Ross
July 30, 2011 – Portland, OR

Please accept my humble entry for the Suthi Picotte photography contest! It’s a little ditty I refer to as “Boomdeyada,” for reasons that become obvious. I apologize for the random file server delivery, but the video was too big to send through regular email. My name is Liz, and my fiance is Ross. We’ll be getting married near Portland, Oregon on July 30, 2011. If we’re lucky enough to win, we would of course be happy to pay Suthi’s travel expenses.

P.S. If it wasn’t clear, the inspiration for the video is the Discovery Channel commercials. And the instrumental accompaniment I downloaded from Olga Nunes’s website.

And last but not least…

{Wedding Music Radness Recap} part 2: the reception

(Hey you. Yes, you! Before you read this, go here and read all about our ceremony music so you’re up to speed. Aight? Cool.)

Its grand entrance time, yo! And we always knew we wanted Jump Around play as our reception entrance music. I mean come on. It’s only one of the most legendary party beats ever. But, the Bungalow Club had accidentally miscommunicated the DJ set-up situation and so The Flashdance wasn’t able to play during cocktail hour or dinner as we planned. And you know what? It didn’t even matter one bit! The Bungalow Club put on a great, eclectic music mix, Michael got to relax and enjoy the dinner and toasts… and we brought the hype ourselves!

DH-1625

It is my pleasure to introduce, Mr. and Mrs. Broke-Ass!

The first dance song was an elusive mistress.  It took us forevah to find the right jam for that moment, but when we did, awww yeah… Brace yourselves, my inner hippie is breaking out, and I’m about to get real with y’all. Bob Marley is my guardian angel. No, I swear, he is. (insert ganja joke here) But he is! There have been too many coincidental moments in which I’m experiencing some emotional distress, and like magic, Bob’s comforting voice finds its way to me. Whether by way of the radio, or mall muzak, in a film, or on my alarm clock… there Bob is: lifting my spirits with his messages of hope and empowerment. And Three Little Birds is one of our favorite all-time songs, so it was poi-fect! We moved upstairs to the dancefloor, and Michael took over the music. When our guests circled around us and all spontaneously sang along while we danced, it was like a moment out of a dream.

DH-1792

It was all somehow to intimate even though we were surrounded.

DH-1795

we didn't have any set dancemoves, but he made sure to spin me, which he knows I love.

DH-1799

I love how intimate this picture is.

DH-1802

Hunter must have said something really sweet, cuz I'm blushin!

DH-1806

We sang to each other too.

DH-1809

...and made up some silly and sweet new moves.

DH-1820

And ended with a glorious dip kiss, just like I always imagined!

I made the final call on our father/daughter dance song the day of the wedding, after hemming and hawing between two I adored for different reasons for months. I kept the song choice from my father so he’d be surprised and experience it all in the moment. My dance with my dad was absolutely and unforgettably magical, and now I can’t see a daddy-daughter dance without getting weepy and verklempt. This was a song my mom turned me onto, and it absolutely feels like my daddy and me.
Loudon Wainwright III – “My Daughter”

DH-1823

I can barely look at these photos without getting misty

DH-1834

My daddy has the smiliest eyes

DH-1840

I periodically just clung to him while we danced, like a baby monkey.

DH-1825

This one kills me. My heart could burst looking at his expression.

Hunter had a challenge in choosing a tune for the mother-son dance tunes. His mother was a dancer and loved to move, so he wanted a song that would allow them to have fun on the dance floor together… so he chose Shall We Dance from The King & I, which he and his mom used to sing together all the time. Penelope and Hunter tore up the dance floor in a fast-paced and riveting waltz, that ended with her dramatically spinning out and gracefully collapsing in a dramatic curtsey before she handed him off to me. These are some of my favorite photos from the night!
**TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES with audio player**
You can listen to Shall we Dance, here

DH-1847

She was a speed machine - just look at that hair go!

DH-1854

You can see where Hunter gets his acting talent here!

DH-1856

... and Hunter gives a grand bow to her after the collapse!

Aaaaaaand, we didn’t even pick special songs for anything else!  Weaving our diverse and random tastes in tune-age into our big day made it feel like home, and helped usher our guests into just the right mood for the kind of party we had planned. And now, whenever we hear Three Little Birds or Melt with You, its never quite the same… in all the right ways.

Stay tuned for a future post sharing some of the jams that got away – songs we loved, but nixed for one reason or another.

What songs are you picking for your big moments?

{Wedding Porn} Suthi + Sanjay: a feast of color & texture

When people who work in the industry get married, magic almost always ensues, so we’ve got an awesomesauce (and timely) real wedding feature today! It’s the stunning wedding of Suthi and Sanjay! Yep, the same Suthi of Suthi Picotte Photography who’s giving away a free wedding photography package with us (hurry, you can still enter!). For now though you can enjoy these gawjuss photos and take away some wedding inspiration too from this phenomenal green wedding!

We big puffy heart Suthi and her gorgeous wedding!  Through her lens at work, she has seen her fair share of gorgeous dresses, decor, and inspiration… so she was well versed in inspiration when it came time to envision very own ultra fabbie wedding. Suthi had a tremendous entourage of wedding visionaries including florals by Holly Flora, event planning by Angel Swanson of Love and Splendor, and photography by Amy and Stuart. Suthi & Sanjay tied the knot in Los Angeles, and because they are both in the arts (Sanjay is a film producer), naturally their wedding was overflowing with creativity!

Serious eye candy for the stylephile in us all!

Suthi looks like a goddess while getting laced into her stunning dress

The absolute best thing about the wedding was that Suthi and Sanjay incorporated loads of colors and textures into their day. Suthi wore a dress that looked good enough to eat with all of its decadent layers of pleats and ruffles. Yum! She looks like a porcelain doll getting all laced up! I swear, this dress is one of my favorites ever, and guess what yo? You can rent this exact style of St. Pucci at a fraction of the cost at A One Night Affair!

Love this St. Pucci gown? You can rent it for $800 at onenightaffair.com!

Her colorful and trendy bouquet took a mix of colors and consistency orange orchids, green succulents, pink peonies, and deep wine colored roses and were tied together with a bright aqua colored ribbon. Y’all know I love a girl who’s not afraid of some color!

Holly Flora made sure that Suthi's bouquet was bursting with colors. Gorgeous!

They laced in some insanely fly personal touches, such as a beautiful vignette in the entryway complete with exquisite sari fabric, feathers, florals, old family photos, letters and peacocks. A vignette is the perfect eye-catching way to greet your guests and introduce your theme and overall feel of the event… and if you use objects from around your home or from your family/friends, it doesn’t even have to cost a dime!

I totes want my living room to feel like this!

A close up of the vignette reveals old family photos, letters, and personal items to make the display a beautiful expression of Suthi and Sanjay's history and family lineage.

The ceremony and reception was held at the ever-hip Marvimon House – a convertible indoor/outdoor space. The ceremony was outdoors, with a gorgeous swag backdrop accented with Margiold garlands, weaving Indian tradition into their design.

Don't you adore their style? To die for!

But holy Holly Flora, how much do you love love love the tablescape?! The long and rustic wooden tables featured a bounty of myriad colors including using orange, pink, blue, and purple napkins to identify the tables (using color rather than table numbers or something similar) and an earthy moss table runner. Look familiar? That’s because this very wedding inspired our own wedding tablescapes! Moss is a surprisingly inexpensive and sustainable decor option that adds tons of bang for its buck!

All the vases and votives are from Holly Flora's exquisite collection of eclectic vintage glassware.

Take a moment to enjoy the whimsical florals, colors and textures. Now tilt your head to the side so you prevent drooling on your keyboard.

The varied heights of the vases and the differences in florals and tea lights create a visually drool worthy display. I love that not everything is so matchy-matchy. You can scour flea markets and estate sales you can create an eclectic and visually interesting display, even on a budget! Using bud vases and small vintage glassware for vases requires less floral expense as well because you only need one or two buds per vessel.  Just combine various sizes, colors, and textures and you’ll create a truly beautiful and unique space that will be one of a kind without breaking the bank while being more eco-friendly. Plus after the wedding you’ll have a great collection for your home or to give as gifts!

The small details like this jade tiger add whimsy and drama. Everywhere you look you see some new detail!

This venue is truly decadent! The lighting and decor fit so perfectly.

Guests picked up truffles as a gift from a table decorated with mushrooms and amethyst.

This is one of my favorite wedding photos ever. It communicates such a sexy vibe and mood!

Suthi and Sanjay truly had a magical day with luscious details, texture and personality. Go ahead and take some of this inspiration for your own big day… I know I did!  Be bold. Use color. Infuse your personality. Go absolutely wild and it will look incredibly decadent and personal!
And don’t forget to enter the free wedding photography contest to get a chance to work with Suthi – open until May 1st!

{Real Weddings} Khali + Potsch: a vintageously chic e-shoot

What happens when you mix two colorful actors with personalities as big as their hearts, and a photographer with style unique enough to fit?  You get these kick ass pictures, people. We’re talking unique, delightful,  drool inducing photos… saturated with color, charm, and creative spirit… and shot by one of our faves, Kelty at Steep Street.

Khali and Potsch snuggle up on a vintage couch and make themselves feel at home.

I speak from experience when I say that Kelty hit the jackpot with this bride and the groom, my dear friends Khali and Potsch… a simply fantastic couple, teeming with energy and creativity, and hypnotically stylish. Believe me when I tell you that these are two of the most effervescent, inventive, and utterly fun people we’ve had the pleasure to call friends. Khali is a cross between a blonde bombshell of the fifties, and a colorful style maven… and Potsch looks like he just crawled out of an urban outfitters magazine or marlboro commercial. They’re one of those magnetically fabulous couples, you know what I mean? They have such a strong perrsonal flair and are 100% authentically true to their signature style… their personalities and energy are radiant in every way. (can you tell I adore them?)

This picture reminds me of an old silent film. Khali is a damsel in distress and Potsch is going to save the day!

Khali found Kelty through a wedding blog (stalking pays off!) and fell in love with Steep Street’s trademark style of mixing color and texture in vivid and exciting ways. So she decided they had no choice but to road trip it up to Portland with a car full of clothing for some outfit changes, and meet with Kelty for her very own engagement pictures. And now we all get to enjoy the gorgeousness that resulted!

The new and improved "American Gothic" painting. Now complete with a blue vintage hat!

8

Color me in love - with this vibrant feast for the eyes!

Khali also helped Kelty know what kind of styles she liked by creating a collage of old sepia photographs from the twenties for inspiration, and clearly these photos evoke a similar energy. They first shot at a vintage furniture store that gave them full access: they staged furniture, created their own prop set-ups, tried on old hats and were really making the photos their own. In Kelty’s words, “It was almost difficult to approach them for close-ups because I felt like I was intruding on a scene — they often had full dialogues and took on new characters in each location!”

In one word? HOT.

Creating and staging little vignettes is an easy way to incorporate your own unique style into the photos as well. You can do it anywhere that suits you as a couple, but before you start taking snapshots and re-arranging the displays, just be sure to get the owner’s permission.

They paid homage to their kitty with a prop tiger head they found.

I love all of the colors and elements in this photo. I've been playing "I Spy" with it.

They later shot in a tree lined meadow, rich with the colors and textures of nature and evocatively epic looking trees. This dreamy backdrop looks like the couple went deep into an enchanted forest, but really they are just right off the road! I love how the colors really pop against the nature around them.

Potsch & Khali. Now complete with their very own ampersand.

This picture is full of energy....and makes me want to go play hide and seek or tag.

The ever-artsy Khali worked her super creative mojo to use of these outdoor shots and create a postcard save the date that’s huge on charm but small on cost! Mine’s hanging on my fridge right now!

How's that for broke-ass with sassafrass?

I sure hope Kelty’s photographs of Khali and Potsch makes your eyes and heart as happy as they made ours! If you’re like us, and can’t get enough of Khali & Potsch, be sure to check our her blog Boots & CatEyes and their shop, Honey B wearables and usefuls. And if THAT’s not enough, well fine. Here’s a bad-ass stop motion video Kelty made of K&P dancing it out, to make you love them even more!

We’ve been head over heels in love with Steep Street for a long time, but seeing how Kelty captured our friends vibrant, infectious energy just made our jones to meet and work with her like a zillion times stronger. And awww yeah, we’ll get to meet her at K&P’s wedding this October! You can see more of this session on the Steep Street blog, or visit her website for even more eye candy and inspiration!

Are you doing anything special to let your true colors shine, in your engagement shoot?
