6/3 “But How Will It Look on Me?” A Wedding Gown Test Drive at David’s Bridal

You guys really dug my BHLDN wedding gown test drive post and The Broke-Ass Bride received a number of requests to keep the party going. As luck would have it, David’s Bridal was totally into the idea, so with Alyssa from Small Town Girl Photography and Real Bride Shannon in tow, we hit the store in Lewisville, Texas, to take a few of their gorgeous and budget-friendly gowns for a spin on my decidedly not-model body.

While David’s has certainly gotten a bad wrap in the past, it has undergone a beautiful makeover in recent years and remains a top destination for brides on a budget to still frolic among the tulle and lace of their dreams. (Don’t even get me started on Vera’s White line … guh … ) I’ve always appreciated David’s, especially as I got my wedding dress there for about $100 and that worked just fine for me. All the gowns in this post are under $1000, which is nicely nestled in a BAB’s budget range. I was not compensated for this, and all opinions are my own.

It doesn’t take much convincing to get me into something lace-y and sparkly. Many of the dresses I tried on had corset backs, including this one. Man, y’all, corset backs are great. They cinch you in all the right places without being overly restrictive. While this A-line felt a little more like a trumpet silhouette to me, the dress was pretty lightweight and definitely made me feel stunning.

Now this one actually was a trumpet, and I can pretty honestly say that while it makes my curves all kinds of va-va-voom-y, I felt a bit self-conscious about my little pooch (and that’s not being self-deprecating. I drink beer. It’s a thing). The boning in the dress is a bit stiff, but of course that’s what helps it keep shape and make sure those curves stay in check, yo!

Holy satin, Batman! Shannon loved this gown when she saw it. Y’all, there’s a lot to this dress: the ruching, the appliques, the sparklez and dat train! All of this goodness also makes this dress a little heavy, and the train was a little tough to maneuver. Of course, at 5’2″, dresses that have a lot going on can be a little overwhelming, but I can’t argue with how this beauty made the girls look.

If ever you want that true “I feel like a princess!” moment, get thineself into this frock! It’s so classically beautiful with the split front, subtle detailing, super flattering A-line and chapel train. Hell, they even put a veil on me and I was a little taken aback. This tomboy felt straight up royal in this gown, and with its removable straps, it can easily convert for ceremony and reception. I’m a bit surprised at how much I loved it, and really loved it on me.

Confession: I freaking love chiffon. And tulle (#duh). But chiffon is so soft and flowy and makes for a super lightweight dress. Much like the A-line gown before it, I marveled at myself a bit in this one because it’s such a classic line, but the draping of the skirt gives it a bit more of a fun beachy appeal. The beading on the bodice is subtle and not overbearing and this gown is super easy to move around in.

Tulle: Check. Illusion neckline: Check. Sparklez: Check. Twirlability? NAILED IT! GUYS. This was the big winner for me during this shoot. There’s something very … secure (I guess?) about illusion necklines when you have a bust that’s on the larger side. Or maybe I just love them and like the way I look in them. When I put this pretty on, I immediately started grinning and knew that I’d have to take her for a twirl, because she looked too perfect for it. I kind of just want to wear it forever.

David's Bridal KP3696This gown was the other winner for me. She’s so soft and flowy. I imagine she’d be perfect for a garden party soiree or back yard wedding. I felt sweet as a peach in this girl. The accent draping at the waist is stunningly flattering and the material is one that’s nigh on impossible to stop caressing. And if you’re looking for a gown that is so lightweight you can flit around all night long without getting tired, she might be your match.

I’ve found as I’ve tried on many a gown for shoots that I learn to know what looks good on me, and what makes me comfortable. While these are not always one in the same (some gowns look great on my frame, but I don’t love the way I look and vice versa), I firmly believe that you keep going until you find one that makes you happy and comfortable.

David’s Bridal has been in the wedding gown biz for quite some time and they’ve lasted for a reason: The gowns are good quality, and they’re accessible for nearly any budget. Many of them come with corset backs, which make finding your fit considerably easier, and they’re flattering as hell. While the chain aspect might scare off many brides, if you’re on a budget and really don’t know what you want (or maybe you do, but you’re not sold), they’re a great resource to try on a number of different styles all within your reach. They also offer personalized service, which is super beneficial, as trying on wedding gowns can be stressful.

A huge thanks to the amazing team at David’s Bridal, to Alyssa at Small Town Girl Photography  (yo! North Texas brides: Her packages start at $1000 and she’s SUPER fun to work with! Get on it!) and Shannon, of course, for being my partner in crime
