I wanted pies, my fiance wants cake. Pies are actually more suited for outdoor summer weddings. No icing to melt, not as much exposed sugar to attract bugs. You do NOT have to have a cake - you also do NOT have to have a cake tasting! Get over the hyperreal, people. It was a great reception. I'm going to make my cake (plus a gluten-free additional mini-cake) because I don't like a lot of store bought or even professional cakes, but like my own quite a bit. We're also skipping the smash. But really, it can be amazing how much opposition you get to what really isn't the biggest part of the wedding. I've never met anyone who ever raved about how delicious the wedding cake was (okay, except the aforementioned friend, and another friend who went with twelve dozen cupcakes with buttercream frosting) - go with what is comfortable for you! Instead, we did a sort of dessert table. We did have 2 different types of cakes, just normal 2 layer rounds, but we also had a couple different types of pies and an assortment of fancy-ish cookies.
