{Can’t Afford It/Get Over It} The Sheath Dress

This week’s CAI/GOI request comes from a gal who wants to keep her bridal look simple, elegant, chic, and so-not-strapless. Bride Monika wrote in describing her dream dress dilemma:

I feel a bit alone in the wilderness of wedding dress shopping as I don’t suit/like strapless dresses on me, but there seems to be a really limited range of dresses with straps/shoulders/sleeves that aren’t:

a. still really poofy
b. covered in head to toe sparkly thing (I like sparkly things but there’s something about the simplicity of the Helena dress and the contrast of the sparkly things on the collar/straps that absolutely slays me)
c. made for the bigger lady (I’m 5 foot 3 and on the small side)

Any ideas on how to get over it??

You bet your bottom dollar I’ve got some ideas for you, Miss Monika. Take a look at these:

Oh gawd, yes. You could SO easily go for a simple, plain-ish sheath then Bam! Kick it up a notch with an amazeballz statement necklace and some uber funky accessories. Do it!

Oh good GOD these gowns are gorgeous and super-flattering. From the looks I got at bridal salons when I squeaked out, "Maybe, possibly, somewhere in the back might you have something that isn't… you know… strapless???", I might as well have had 4 heads. Shoo. That Modeca one makes me wish I hadn't already bought my (strapless) dress. :)

I found mine at J. Crew!!! Very simple, beautiful, flattering…. Wearing lots of varied length strands of pearls! I was SO excited when I found it. J. Crew! Who knew?!?

I just fell in love with #6… thanks so much for the introduction :)

Love that none of these are strapless! When I went searching for dresses it took forever to find something with straps. Love the Modeca!

I find the blog posts from BrokeAssBride to be very informative and helpful. I'd love to be entered to win the Bow Clutch in Victorian Violet, by mermaidsdream that is up for grabs this week. It is absolutely beautiful and would make the perfect gift for my MOH. MissSCV2008 at Hotmail dot com.

Loving that Nicole Miller dress… but sheath gowns for me are almost out of the question. Doesn't work well for bustier gals.

Loving this section. You came up with a lot of great gowns at great prices that are stunning! This should help her get over it!

Ditto. I was open to various silhouettes, but I wanted straps of some sort. The women working at the bridal salons looked at me like I was from Mars. I love the options presented here. I'd also suggest J.Crew, Nordstrom, Ann Taylor, and BlueFly. The other option I considered was getting a strapless dress and then wearing a bolero.

I love that second BCBG with the one kimono sleeve!

I just found out davids sells cap sleeves that you can add to strapless dresses, they're sheer with a bit o sparkle
