Something “Old/New/Borrowed/Blue” Needs a Make-over.
I am not superstitious, but I do enjoy a clever rhyme that encourages me to acquire more pretty and meaningful things. So for that purpose and that purpose only, I will partially play along with the whole Something Old/New/Borrowed/Blue thing. And by “partially” I mean I will proudly wear my “Something Blue” the day I marry my sweetheart: a pair of SEQUIN BLUE NIPPLE PASTIES. Observe:
Fun, right? I found a way to do the whole “Something Blue” thing on my terms. But honestly, I’m kinda tired of this old-balls rhyme. ‘Cause let’sgetserious. How many brides have done this before for their “something blue”? …Not counting my bloggy buddies who I have since convinced to join the blue-b revolution. Ladies, you and your sparkly T’s RAWK. But I chose these nipple pasties as my something blue not because they will bring me “luck” on my wedding day, but because they will make me smile when shiz gets too serious or intense. So that reasoning got me thinking. Why not choose 4 things to wear on your wedding day that bring you something other than just “luck”? I say let’s update this sucker. Make the items represent something more. Let’s make this shiz tangible. Make it a lil more now, a lil more pimp. Try this little ditty on for size:
Something Green, Something Witty, Something Soothing, Something Pretty
Ooo Zexy! Let’s break it down, shall we?
Let’s start with Something Green. “Green” can be anything you want it to be… but I encourage you to use the eco-friendly definition of the word, or the actual color definition of the word. (Or the stoner version of the word. SEE: Something Soothing. Ok, I kid). For me, my something green is my custom wedding gown made by the Green Queen herself, Deborah Lindquist. But there are many, many other ways for you, the bride, to go green on your person. For example: wear a used veil/headpiece; carry an old cloth handkerchief for the tears; wear a sample gown or a used gown; wear a pair of shoes you already own; wear wedding bands that are made from recycled materials; or carry a bouquet made of recycled materials…

This beautiful bouquet is made out of recycled tin! Carry it down the aisle, then decorate your nest with it.
Something Witty. I’m a hardcore jokester. But when it comes time for me to be in SeriousBritt mode, aka wedding day ceremony, I always forget to appreciate the funny. Something witty can basically be anything that gives you a healthy chuckle in the face of wedding day nerves. Think garter flask, nipple pasties, funny underwear, no underwear, a goofball pic of you and your partner tucked in your bra, the plastic penis whistle you saved from your bachelorette party, a copy of your vows written on Sesame Street stationary… anything that makes you laugh!

If my va-jay was rockin this puppy on the big day, this would be me up at the altar: Vows, cry cry cry, OMG I'm wearing a thong with a chihuahua in a poncho, laugh, laugh, laugh.
Something Soothing. After talking in depth about my Ceremony Stage Fright recently, y’all know I’mma rock something soothing on my wedding day. That’s a straight-up given. For me, that will be my garter flask. But here are some other ideas: wear a perfume that brings you back to good times (I don’t know about you, but certain smells do that to me); have your partner write something simple on your arm like, “I love you”; put your Maid of Honor on back rub duty right before you walk out; carry an old letter/email your partner wrote to you at the start of your relationship… like so:

This is an email Mike wrote to me after I asked him to go to the Planetarium with me... on like, a date, n stuff. Reading it makes me smile every time, and would surely sooth my wedding day nerves. So this piece of paper will be tucked in my bra for sure
Something Pretty is your total fluff purchase. I’m talkin’ ohmaguh “have to have” prettiness. Something that dismisses practicality or makes your heart flutter at the sight of it. Something that you really want to buy or want to try but would never dream of it unless given the excuse to. Couture lingerie is the first thing that comes to my mind… and of course there is jewelry in any and all forms. Here are a few other ideas: Henna, professional hair color, long fake nails, anus bleaching (sure, why not?), fake eye lashes, teeth whitening, hair extensions, a body wax, a Brazilian Blow-out…
Are you going traditional with Something Old/New/Borrowed/Blue? Or are you avoiding the concept completely? And finally, what would be your Something Green/Witty/Soothing /Pretty, and why?

I'm a huge fan of your updated axiom, especially the Something Witty part. We need humor every day, and especially on our wedding day. I love making up new expressions. When I was searching for an engagement ring for my 'prometida,' I ended up getting her a little blue sapphire stone on a white gold band, in no small part due to the fact that her eyes are a similar color. So I proposed the following:
"Eyes of blue, ring of blue, a happy marriage waits for you."
I'm pretty sure that'll catch on. Red works too: "Eyes of red, ring of red, love will always grace your bed." That's more sexytimes, but, you know.
Never really considered the "Something old…" rhyme, but I really like your "Something green…" Perhaps I'll make up my own for the wedding day. If I was going by your rhyme, my dress will be my something green (making it out of eco-fabric) and my shoes will be my something pretty.
I didn't do anything with that old rhyme (and plenty of people asked!). I can definitely see your new one, though! My dress was green-I purchased it from a Brides Against Breast Cancer event. Something witty: My hubs and I did the "Go Team Venture!" V-sign in the air after we had our kiss. We thought it was hilarious.
Something Soothing: I had an awful lot of stress leading up to the wedding, and even the day of. We slept in the same bed the night before the wedding, despite jarring remarks from family. The hubs is my rock, and it was so restful to just lay in bed together and talk about how we were getting married in a couple of hours. My something pretty was my headband. I had made a birdcage veil to wear, but when I saw this black headband with blue and green feathers on etsy, I just knew I had to have it. I bought it, and gave the birdcage veil to a coworker (who wore it for her wedding 2 weeks ago!).
I inadvertently have the something old, something new, … (except for the borrowed part) because I'm wearing a blue dress and carrying a bouquet made of vintage brooches.
I suppose I would count my vintage brooch bouquet as my "green" thing for the eco-sense of the word. I bought a pair of green shoes the other day, so that might work, too. I haven't started to look for my under-dress stuff, so my something "witty" will probably end up there. My something soothing: we're not sleeping apart the night before, and we're getting ready together. My something pretty: the dress. The silk and chiffon are just so soft, and the color is so damn pretty.
I'll be wearing my Blue-bs with pride lady!
How much do I love the Dave is a part of one of your oldest email exchanges with Mike. He's like kinda sorta famous now and not because he's Canadian. I better ask him for his autograph next time I see him.
Was totally not going to do any of the something old, something new blah blah blah blah blah blah…. but I'm definitely down for the new rhyme! I can totally do something green, something witty, something soothing, something pretty! Our "green" will be the reused mason/ball jars. Our something witty will be, well us. Our something soothing will be the two beers I shotgun in our hotel room. And our something pretty will be my day at the spa! Love this Britt!
I haven't given much thought to the "Something Borrowed, Something Blue" rhyme, but I love the new version you came up with, especially "Something Witty." If I were to do "Something Borrowed" or "Something Green," it would probably be using my oldest sister's wedding veil. It is so simple that it can be worn with any kind of gown.

This is great! Much more current than the older version
Love the "Something Green" …very clever and fun!
Love the "Something Green" …very clever and fun!
This is my second wedding and I'm on a tight budget about $8000 so I actually was having fun with the old rhyme. It has made it very easy for me to politely ask to borrow things for the wedding. So far I'm borrowing my first mum in law's from my late hubby pearl necklace and a beautiful hair comb. From my mom most of the flowers in her garden and a diamond and pearl bracelet. A friend is letting me borrow her blue bouquet crystals. My sis in law to be is letting me borrow a lace hankie. So I've something old borrowed and blue, my something new will be my dress which I can afford because of all the help from friends and family.
This is so awesome!! LOL how funny are those nipple things! But they will def make you smile and your new husband smile when he sees them later that night! Love the something witty and something soothing!
