{Introducing} THE SPLURGE

Because sometimes you just want a little BANG in your buck, we introduce to you:

Wedding Registry ideasThe Splurge is our new fantasy shopping series dedicated to the finer things in life that we aspire to put on the registry, save up for, blow it all on,  or just daydream about!  It’s all about straight up fun window-shopping fantasy feasts for the eyes. ‘Cause sometimes ya know what your bank account says, but you’ve just gotta pop the cork on your champagne tastes and get high on the bubbles. You’ve got the urge. The urge to SPLURGE!!!

First Up: The Athena Water Ionizer from ION WAYS

Wedding Registry IdeasWe are serious water snobs. I blame Dana. When it comes to water, she may have one of the most sensitive palettes in the land. My parents think she has a lime obsession, because her secret weapon to mask the taste of their tap water is to squeeze some citrus into every drop she drinks. So, when she saw the ultimate in water purifiers, The Athena, at a green products expo recently… her eyes went AWOOGA! Lucky for us, IonWays was kind enough to provide us with a complimentary review unit!

The price may well give you drymouth,  at $2,195 big’uns, but this is no ordinary water purifier. It doesn’t just run your water through a charcoal filter like most household sytems. Instead, it separates it: dividing the acidic elements of your water from the alkaline elements, allowing you to closely monitor and adjust the levels according to your preference. I could go on about all the possible health benefits to this (and I will in a later post), but for now I’ll tell you the secret reason I love it: The filter talks when you turn it on! Hello future robot household appliance fantasy, here we come!!! Meet Hunter Jetson… and his filter, Athena…

I'd be worried that thing would become sentient and take over my house.

Cool new feature, though! Looking forward to it. :)

  2. Jak

This blog has gone SO DOWNHILL in recent months. Sponsored everything, little or nothing to do with weddings, and just plain uninteresting. I used to LOVE this site…until it totally sold out.

  3. Alicia

Do you think if I registered for this, someone would splurge and fulfill my wishes!? We were just talking about getting something to make our water alkaline so we could stop drinking from bottles. I'll have to start saving…

  4. Kat

I keep hearing “BING! Alkaline water dispensing… BING!” in the middle of the night…

  5. BrokeAssBride

Its very possible! The great thing about registries is that they're the ultimate wish list :) And more and more, groups of coworkers, family members or friends are \”teaming up\” to go in on large purchases like these for lucky couples. It can't hurt to try! Good luck!

  6. BrokeAssBride

Oh man, that would be hysterical! We often joke that we'll wake up in the middle of the night to find it conversing with our microwave :)
Thanks for the comment! This will be fun…

  7. BrokeAssBride

Barbara, we did get it for free. It says so right there in the text. And we said, right up front, this is just for fun. No pity necessary. Have a nice day!

I love you! I love water! and I love Robots!!!

  9. BrokeAssBride

I had a feeling you'd have that stuck in your head! Hope you had a fun trip to Escalate!

  10. BrokeAssBride

Aw, thanks! You're too cute :) We, robots and water love you back!

  11. Shira

this is so cute. What a fun idea! I mean, who out there doesn't love to fantasize or window shop? I know I do! plus, that water filter looks amazeballs.

To Jak, Barbara and other haterz, take a breath. my goodness you guys are judgy.

haha…us broke peeps do need a little splurge here and there! i don't know if i am ready for "the jetsons" water filter, because we haven't even broke down and bought a brita filter yet. lol! but i am excited to see what other splurge-worthy items you will be chatting about!

  13. BrokeAssBride

    Thanks Christina!

  14. Tonia

I think I'll stick with boiling my water or continue to take my chances with the tap :-)

  15. barbara

This is the dumbest thing I’ve seen on this site in a while. You’re allegedly “broke” but you spent $2000 on a fancy Brita? Please excuse me while I pity you.

I really hope you got this for free and just forgot to put your little symbol up. Otherwise this is absolutely insane. Your reality is really out of tune with the “broke ass” real world.

  16. Suzy

I've heard of the benefits of Alkaline water. If it does what they say it does, it actually might save me a few thousand in Medical bills down the road… but I'd probably SPLURGE because it talks :-)

I miss when this site used to be about weddings/life on a budget. Regardless of whether you got this for free or not, it's totally inappropriate to post it here as a "splurge". I am now in the midst of planning my wedding for 6k or less and I, sadly, am finding this site less and less helpful to my cause.

  18. Jeff

I hope the Athena filter doesn't hear what those trolls said. Everyone knows that futuristic appliances that talk often turn to "crush, kill, destroy" mode and come after those that oppose them. P.S. I want one.

  19. Janet

Maybe the people that don't like this post are forgetting about the contests you've been able to have giving away free stuff to people because of your sponsors. Like $4,000 worth of photography for free for a lucky couple. Maybe they're forgetting all the posts you've done about clever ways to do fabulous things. Or vendors to contact who like to make deals. Maybe they don't know the definition of splurge or maybe they don't like having fun. This is a great idea and in no way detracts from the Broke-ass Bride, it's just an addition. I'm just sayin.

    Thanks Jeff!

Aw, thanks. Those are very good points, and ones I truly hope our dear disgruntled readers take to heart.

Whoa Nelly! Ladies, why the bunched-up panties? I currently live on a super-tight budget, but I still appreciate incredible innovations that benefit my health and well-being. And if they're expensive, get creative, or put it on your wish list, or whatever…but no need to lash out! My neighbor has one of these water filters because she's a massage therapist and her wealthy client installed it at her place. I regularly stop by to fill up a few jugs of H20. So there's one idea for how to save on something like this — make it a community water filter. Awesome. With all of the crap that's in our drinking water (birth control pill residue, other fun medical waste, chemicals, etc etc) this is a really great thing to know about, and I'm grateful to BAB and the FH for spreading the word.
    Word.

  23. Guest

I'm with Janet. Thanks BAB, for recognizing that it is fun to fantasize about splurging. I appreciate all you do!

Seriously, if that thing looks enough like the one them evil iron man clones for me to to keep my voice down, you know? DO NOT TAUNT THE ATHENA WATER IONIZER.

we just opened a registry at myregistry.com and I can only imagine my mother's reaction the instant she saw an item a. as expensive as this and b. as hilarious as this. I agree it has a cool purpose though but for now as I am a bride on a budget I'll stick to go ol' poland spring lol
