A Surgical Staycation

Today at 11:45am, I’ll be going into surgery.

I’m having two separate implants put into my right eye – one for glaucoma, and one is a time-release steroid pellet which will slowly release medication to keep inflammation at bay for the next 3 years.  They will bring my inner-eye implant count to 9 total, across both eyes.  If you want the back story on my eyes, click here.

It’s been a long time coming, and I have been through this 7 times before, but that still doesn’t prepare me. For some reasons, eye patients consistently find the pain to worsen with each surgery. I’ll be on movement restriction for 3 weeks at minimum – which means no flab to fab workouts, no bending, lifting, getting jiggy with my husband, or laughing too hard. I’ll be behind a patch for about 3 weeks and unable to drive for at least 2 weeks.  I will be stared at everywhere I go in public…. people trying to figure out what’s wrong with me, children getting scared of me; no one is very smooth about hiding their fascination, no one has the balls to just ask me.

On the flipside, I won’t go blind.  I’ll get to enjoy blue skies, the faces of my loved ones, Paco’s crazy google eyes, Hunter’s melty chocolate eyes, works of art, my own reflection, a sumptuous platter of food, an entertaining film.  I’ll also get to continue blogging, drinking in digital inspiration, and tweeting my head off.  Yeah, the trade off ain’t so bad, if you think of it that way.

So there you have it.  As much as I’m tempted to complain, I know the alternative to surgery is a far worse fate.

I’ll be away for a bit as I recover, but I’ve lined up a few great guests to pop in and keep y’all company in the interim, and I’ll make sure Hunter pops in to give an update as we go.  If all goes well, I’ll commemorate my return by kicking off my much anticipated and belated wedding recaps!

So, please think of me today, and send me all your best healing mojo.  I’ll catch ya on the flipside!
